It’s Time for a Readathon!
April 10th, 2010 § 35 Comments
it’s readathon time! i will be updating this post throughout the day with progress, number of pages read, disasters, etc. and i will be on twitter using the #readathon hashtag, as well.
happy reading to everyone participating! and i cannot say enough thank you’s to everyone who helped organize, donated gifts, hosted mini-challenges and, of course, to the chearleaders.
let the madness fun begin!
2am (Hour 1)
omg, i’m actually awake! only people who actually know me can appreciate the significance of this, but i’m up and ready to go.
Currently Reading: The Bird Room by Chris Killen
Pages Read: 0 123
Location: couch
Thoughts: this is a very strange book… not sure it was the best choice for a readathon book, but i’m almost done with it now. not entirely engaging, but i’m interested enough to finish it out.
3am (Hour 2)
Finished: The Bird Room by Chris Killen
Currently Reading: Coraline by Neil Gaiman and P. Craig Russell
Pages Read: 79 99
Location: couch
Thoughts: i’m happy to be moving onto something else. the first book was a bit of a downer, so i’m picking up my first graphic novel for a change of pace. and i’ll probably go grab some snacks soon. getting hungry.
4am (Hour 3)
i’m still going strong! and having fun with the little short breaks to check up on twitter and other blogs. so far, i’m not allowing myself to get too distracted, so yay!
Currently Reading: Coraline by Neil Gaiman and P. Craig Russell
Pages Read: 77 118
Location: couch
Thoughts: i think Coraline is probably better read when it’s not dark out. it’s a tad bit creepy… should be finishing it up soon. i think i need a happy read after this.
5am (Hour 4)
Finished: Coraline by Neil Gaiman and P. Craig Russell
Currently Reading: The Dark Days of Hamburger Halpin by Josh Berk
Pages Read: 46 72
Location: still on the couch
Thoughts: must. get. food. coffee and cereal are in my belly. this book is quirky and cute. not a rapid page-turner, but pretty good so far.
6am (Hour 5)
watching the sunrise while i read… that’s a first.
Currently Reading: The Dark Days of Hamburger Halpin by Josh Berk
Pages Read: 74
Location: the couch
Thoughts: cute book. getting more interesting as we go and i should hopefully be able to finish it up in the next hour and a half. i’m pretty happy with my progress so far!
7am (Hour 6)
had to take a short break to let the dog out and got a little distracted doing some browsing, but it’s all in good fun.
Currently Reading: The Dark Days of Hamburger Halpin by Josh Berk
Pages Read: 61
Location: the couch – can’t believe i’ve been sitting here this long already. time flies!
Thoughts: things are getting interesting. very Hardy Boys, very funny. should be able to finish this one up next hour *crosses fingers* and move onto book numero four.
8am (Hour 7)
i think i drank too much coffee… my tummy is a little unsettled.
Currently Reading: The Dark Days of Hamburger Halpin by Josh Berk
Pages Read: 75
Location: still couch… maybe i should move just to mix it up a bit.
Thoughts: this book just gets better as it goes. didn’t quite finish, but only 10 pages or so left.
9am (Hour 8 )
took a short break to be social with tolkien (that’s my boyfriend – don’t be jealous!) and the puppers. he’s being so supportive – the bf, not the pup – it’s cute.
Finished: The Dark Days of Hamburger Halpin by Josh Berk
Currently Reading: If I Stay by Gayle Forman
Pages Read: 12 45
Location: desk who am i kidding? i’m still on the couch.
Thoughts: happy to be starting a new book! only 35 pages in, but this book has lots of potential. i have a feeling i’m going to need a box of tissues.
10am (Hour 9)
spent some time playing around on the computer, reading comments, mini-challenge type stuffs.
Currently Reading: If I Stay by Gayle Forman
Pages Read: 47
Location: spent some time at the desk, then back to the couch
Thoughts: feeling great and enjoying this book. the writing is nice and simple, but very moving.
11am (Hour 10)
all of you that are volunteering as chearleaders have my heart. you guys are awesome!
Currently Reading: If I Stay by Gayle Forman
Pages Read: 36
Location: the couch has become like home
Thoughts: i’m lingering on pages, so although not a quick page turner type read, i’m really enjoying this book.
12pm (Hour 11)
almost done with my 4th book. i’m actually impressing myself here!
Currently Reading: If I Stay by Gayle Forman
Pages Read: 54
Location: between the couch and my 70 lb dog who thinks he’s a lapdog
Thoughts: yeah, i cried. twice. you got a problem with it?
1pm (Hour 12)
Finished: If I Stay by Gayle Forman
Currently Reading: Hypnotizing Maria by Richard Bach
Pages Read: 29 69
Location: couch, couch, and desk with a kitty warmer to keep me company
Thoughts: still a little dazed after If I Stay, but moving on to book #5! picking a short one with Hypnotizing Maria (eBook) that allows me to sit at my computer for a bit.
2pm (Hour 13)
going to take a break and take a shower. i feel like i need to a refresh button (you know, f5 myself) to get a clean slate to make it through the next, wow… 11 hours!
Currently Reading: Hypnotizing Maria by Richard Bach
Pages Read: 83
Location: sitting at the desk
Thoughts: this book is weird, sort of stream of consciousness type stuff. it almost seems like a rough draft with lots of thoughts that never went through a proper editing process, typos and all… granted it’s a galley, but still, very strange. i’ll be ready to move on to, i’m thinking, Watchmen next.
3pm (Hour 14)
whew, it feels good to be freshened up. i feel like new and i’m ready for the rest of the readathon!
Finished: Hypnotizing Maria by Richard Bach
Currently Reading: Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons
Pages Read: 37 68
Location: back to the couch
Thoughts: happy to be starting something new after that weirdness that i just got done with. hmm… i just realized that Watchmen doesn’t have page numbers, and according to goodreads, it’s 408 pgs total. i guess i’ll do a page update once i’m done, which may not be for a couple hours, at least.
4pm (Hour 15)
whew, rough hour for me. my neck is sore, my head is a little dull. going to take a break and try to come back fresh. new book, too.
Currently Reading: Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons
Pages Read: … will have to fill in later. Watchmen doesn’t have pg. #’s
Location: couch
Thoughts: i’m going to have to switch gears here and move to another book. The Watchmen is an all consuming sort of thing, but it requires more attention to detail than i think i am able to give after so many hours of reading. it’s really interesting, but not the right book for the task at hand. i’ll come back to it sometime next week, post-readathon.
5pm (Hour 16)
i actually went out into the backyard and ran laps for 5 minutes. my neighbors must think i’m insane.
Currently Reading: Stardust by Neil Gaiman
Pages Read: 52
Location: couch
Thoughts: lovely story. steamy sex scene. i’m awake.
6pm (Hour 17)
i took a short break and worked on a mini-challenge and some random bloggish stuff. going to have to eat some dinner sometime soon, too, if i’m going to try to keep this party going all night.
Currently Reading: Stardust by Neil Gaiman
Pages Read: 44
Location: i am one with the couch
Thoughts: another book that isn’t quite the page-turner, but is still very good. i think it will get more exciting as we go.
7pm (Hour 18)
omg, i won two challenges! so, i got to pick a pack from the readathon stash, of which i picked the Jo Nesbo pack. it only seemed fitting, since he was mentioned in my pantyworthy post and i haven’t read any of his books. and i won the Literate Housewife’s mini-challenge and picked up the Millenium trilogy, which has me beyond excited.
so, needless to say, i didn’t get much reading done this hour. i’ve been doing my happy dance the whole time. and eating dinner. minor details.
Currently Reading: Stardust by Neil Gaiman
Pages Read: 22
Location: i’ve been all over the place this hour… hence, the low page count
Thoughts: still enjoying this book, but omg, i can’t handle the distractions like i could earlier in the day!
8pm (Hour 19)
i was thankfully able to focus a bit better this hour. we’re winding down soon!
Currently Reading: Stardust by Neil Gaiman
Pages Read: 56
Location: dining room table – less likely to fall asleep
Thoughts: hmm… might just finish this next hour if i hustle.
9pm (Hour 20)
i’m fading a bit, but i think i can hang tight. i went and grabbed a cup of tea, since i’m all out of coffee.
Currently Reading: Stardust by Neil Gaiman
Pages Read: 50
Location: still at the dining room table – less likely to fall asleep
Thoughts: nearly finished with this book and should be moving on to my final book soon. it’s still wonderful and i’m very glad to have chosen it for a readathon read.
10pm (Hour 21)
Finished: Stardust by Neil Gaiman
Currently Reading: Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Pages Read: 25 40
Location: floating around to avoid falling asleep
Thoughts: excited to finally be reading Hunger Games. i saved this one for the end on purpose.
11pm (Hour 22)
whew, i seriously struggled through this hour. i had to get up and read walking around to avoid falling asleep and my page count is definitely suffering!
Currently Reading: Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Pages Read: 35
Location: standing, sitting, doing pushups – anything to keep me awake!
Thoughts: things are starting to pick up with this book and i can really see why people love it. and i’m just getting started.
12am (Hour 23)
we’re moving into the home stretch and although my reading pace and comprehension is not at all what it could/should be, i’m so very glad that i’m doing this. i wonder if i’ll come back tomorrow and read this mess of notes and laugh at myself…
Currently Reading: Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Pages Read: 36
Location: alternating between the couch and the dining room table
Thoughts: eager to see where this story is going, but i’m not going to finish it tonight. either way, one more hour to go!
1am (FINAL HOUR!!!)
i can’t believe i made it and i’m still awake. i don’t feel like i could go forever, or like a million bucks, but i feel pretty great about all of this.
Currently Reading: Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Pages Read: 69
Location: dining room table
Thoughts: this book is good fun and i’ll probably try to finish it up tomorrow, since i’m not going to make it tonight.

Good Luck! Go Team Woodsworth! —Happy Reading!
You’re a speedy reader! I’m only about 1/2 way through my first book. But it’s looking like I’ll get to a second today which for me is fast! LOL
Keep up the great work
unfortunately, the speediness wore off throughout the day as there was more bustle around the house and i started to get tired. but, it was a rather fun and productive day, no matter what.
i hope you had as much fun in you readathon experience as i did!
Traditional read-a-thon blessing:
May the bookshelf be there to greet you.
May all the books appeal.
May the fridge be full of tasty snacks;
the words fall soft upon your eyes and until the read-a-thon ends,
may you always hold a book in the palm of your hand.
Good luck today!
I could not imagine getting up at 2! It starts at a reasonable hour here, but that means it ends at a later hour, so I guess that balances out…
Happy reading!
Good call on Coraline being a bit to creepy to read that late at night (or would it be considered that early in the morning?) Keep up the good (and speedy) reading!
loved coraline the book and movie! haven’t read the graphic novel so can’t say. it is quirky. but then most of neil’s stuff is which is what i love about him. just wanted to wish you a happy read-a-thon-ing!
Hello!!!
First off…GO TEAM WORDSWORTH!!! *shakes pom poms in air*
Second off…I read Coraline as my first book for today’s read-a-thon. I thought it was kind of creepy. Okay a lot creepy. I was pretty happy to move on to the next book.

I am incredibly impressed that you got up at 2am. I would have turned my alarm right back off and continued to sleep. Happy reading!
2AM start…is that Hawaii? Hardcore! I struggled with a 8AM start…keep it up, but don’t be afraid to take a nap to enjoy the reading more, if necessary!
yes, sorry for the late reply, but i am in hawaii. i was so consumed with reading yesterday that i sort of neglected my lovely commenters!
thanks for the encouragement. it all helped get me through the roughest parts!
You got up at 2am? You are utterly crazy! And I mean that as a compliment.
lol, surprisingly the waking up was not the hard part. i was like a kid on christmas, all excited to get reading.
Another cheer for you…

Cheering you on!
That’s funny…my Watchmen has page numbers…
I hope you’re enjoying it!
i was enjoying it, but it was such a patient read that i set it aside to finish it later. i’ll try to find some time this week to read it.
You’ve been busy, girl! Keep up the good work! And congrats on winning the mini-challenge!
Not sure what time zone you are in -but good job with the reading.
Running laps during a readathon is just awesome! Keep going. You’re in the home stretch now.
Don’t let those eyes droop
head out on the stoop
get some fresh air
before heading back to that chair
pick up your book
take another look
read, read, read
Hold your eyelids up! Almost at the finish line! You can do it!!
